The difference with This American Life, however,

is that some of those stories are not really feel-good type stories. Some of them can be downright disturbing.

I don't receive the NPR station, so I rarely hear This American Life. However, any program that features David Sedaris can't be labelled as "feel good"!

And yes, I really love David Sedaris. I was lucky to see him at a live reading a few years ago. In the question-answer session afterward, the conversation was not an audience eagerly grasping at wisdom from the great man, but a family reunion. "How's your Dad? " "Are you and Amy working on anything?" "Does your family interact with Hugh?" Wonderful.

Back to Kuralt. Growing up in that era, sometimes my parents wouldn't let us watch the news. But they would call us to the TV for "On the Road".

I wish I remember who did the story, but there was a segment about when the narrator who did field interviews for a feel good human interest personality and how they didn't tell the whole story.

Here's the link to the episode. The rumor is that guy in question was Paul Harvey.
