I know we have this warm and fuzzy impression of FDR the great father of the country during the Great Depression and WWII, but let's be real about this: FDR was a proto-fascist. The guy had no respect for the Constitution and would likely have stayed in office for ten more terms if he could have lived that long. He bullied the Supreme Court, used the FBI to spy on and harass political opponents, and put tens of thousands of American citizens in concentration camps. What a swell guy!

I wouldn't necessarily say he was overrated, because as far as politicians go he was pretty exceptional. Didn't make him a good person, but then again, talented fascists often make the best politicians.

Okay, which President resided over the most explosive expansion in both Federal Government and Executive Branch power in the nation's history? What President basically re-wrote the rules regarding the government's ability to intrude on private economic matters via the commerce clause? What President bullied the Supreme Court into recognizing such aggrandizements by threatening to pack the court with his handpicked lackeys? Which President violated the law by secretly aiding Great Britain before the US entry into WWII? Which President turned the FBI into a domestic spying service to aid his political schemes?
