Did Fairey's use make the original, obscure, Obama photo more or less valuable? More. Most people never noticed or cared about the AP photo. Now it's use has multiplied. Fairey's use is different enough that you can't interchange their use. If you want a t-shirt or poster you use Fairey's. If you want to document Obama at that press conference you need that photo. No actual loss to the AP just imagined dollars they could never have dreamed without Fairey's use.

I wonder if the estates of Washington, Lincoln, Grant, Franklin etc. get paid for use of their images on currency. No?
