Schaden:
My mom lived to the same age. We visited her the last week she was alive but unconsious to our presence. From a mother who cared for me and my fate as a son to a son caring for her and wishing for her best fate. Our roles had reversed.
For the last years of life her mind had deterioated from Alzheimers and she no longer recognized myself or my brothes and sister as her children. She would stare at us and smile as if we were her grand-children or some nice neighborhood people. It was difficult to see her in such a state. I would tease her for an hour or so until I would hear something familar she would always say in the past.
"Oh, Go On!"
With her fingers pursed in front of her as any Italian mom would do. It was then I would see the glimmer in her eyes for a few moments and I believed she recognized me. She didn't die alone and in the end her passing was a blessing.
I am sorry to hear of your loss Schaden. Peace until you and your family.
