Presidential candidates' plausible Christian testimonies
by rhmonson

... looks like they'll be choosing between a Mormon and some second marriages when they go to vote in the Republican primaries. Of all the candidates, Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama have the most plausible Christian testimonies.

I realize that many, particularly "evangelicals", do not consider Mormons to be Christians, and probably many people think a testimony held by a Mormon to be per se implausible (I disagree on both points), but if you consider amounts donated to church and other charities (in dollars and, I suspect, proportion of income), and amount of time spent in church service, each over a lifetime, to be indicators of a plausible testimony, I think it nearly certain that Mitt Romney comes in well ahead of both Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama.

Not disputing at all what you say, but I think the comment was intended to be from the perspective of the hard core evangelicals.

No doubt that Mitt's Mormonism actually very closely matches their beliefs on social issues, but the question is whether they are able and willing to set aside their theological reservations.

That seems to be the big question for the 2008 election.

I wouldn't assume that at ALL. Hillary Clinton has been a lifelong Christian who grew up in the UMC and whose Christian beliefs have shaped her professional and political journey. She has regularly attended Bible studies, even on the Hill, and has studied theology and several theologians in depth.

Don't believe everything the fundamentalists say about her. She seems to be to be one of the most *genuinely* devout people in public office today (which isn't necessarily good or bad, it's just so).

Here's an article from Mother Jones, of all places, about Hillary's faith: <link>.
