Disappointed in Republicans
by BluegrassRiver

About abortion, the last time the Supreme Court reviewed whether or not abortion should remain legal the majority Republican appointed Court decided abortion remains legal. That's right, the Republicans were in charge and kept it legal.

How many years did the lawmaking Congress with majority Republicans keep abortion legal? About twelve. So, can you believe the Republicans on this? How do they get away with the hypocrisy? Is is because the anti-abortion groups like Family Research Council are Republican first and against abortion second?

In my opinion, that problem is much more troublesome than partisanship. It's about fundraising and choosing sides; the Family Research Council and groups like them have staked their lives on opposing the "liberal baby-killing abortion industry". Once that battle is won, there would be no reason for those groups to exist and no issue to reliably inflame the faithful and keep the money rolling in.
so enflame the issue to keep the money rolling?

i'm mad that i've become so cynical that the thought doesn't seem in the least surprising to me. i'm not surprised that the lobby groups try to do this. i'm not surprised that many republicans try to take advantage of it to raise money and to gain support from many of their conservative base.

and even if they did want to overturn it, isn't the point that they have no legal recourse for such? morally, i can understand why someone might find the idea of abortion repugnant (though i'll never understand the folks who don't believe in birth control...), but i don't understand how they feel that in this country there is a way to regulate what someone else does with their body legally! (yet these are the same types who's favorite comeback is along the lines of "if you don't like it here, then why don't you leave!" strangely, they are the ones who don't seem happy with america)...

Tonto, you are absolutely right. The GOP doesn't really want to "resolve" the abortion issue, anymore than they want to really pass an amendment banning gay marriage or flag burning. They know as long as they can blame "liberal activist judges" for these issues, they can rally their base for support.
Listen to them and understand.

Those who oppose abortion frequently oppose birth control, which should logically make abortion less common. As soon as the topic shifts from abortion to birth control, you will notice that the response is still the same. It's about sex, and specifically about "irresponsible" sex. Lines like "if they don't want to have babies they shouldn't be whoring around" are common. It's really not complicated at all.
Who is dumber?
by tonto_goldberg
It makes me wonder. There were a lot of comments around here about a study which purported to "prove" that conservatives were dumber than liberals. The premise was that conservatives made more errors in responding to complex choices than liberals, but no actual effort to relate the complex choice setup to the real world. The study generated comments with lots of emotion but no logic, and illustrated my concern for both sides. So long as both sides continue to push emotional talking points rather than a fact-based problem solving approach to political situations, neither can claim to be very smart.

Bluegrassriver, could it be that Republicans use this issue to get elected/appointed when in reality they don't support an abortion ban?

Also, it seems justices become more liberal after appointment to the Supreme Court. Is it possible that upon reflection of their mandate to uphold the Constitution that they realize women really do have a right privacy in how they deal with their bodies?

Just a thought.

Roberts & Thomas?

They did not become more liberal.
I take it you assume

I take it you assume that Republican Supreme Court judges have no real legal ethical sense. After all, your logic insists that they vote to overturn Roe simply because they feel like it.

IOW you don't believe they actually need a basis in the US Constitution and the law for banning abortion.

Nice view of the legal world you have there. I guess perhaps the GOP appointed justices have at least a modicum of respect for the US Constitution - something you don't seem to have.
