Do skunks make good pets
by NAGillespie

I think the writer of this article failed to answer the question he/she posed in the heading. Space must have been limited, because there is a lot more to say about skunks as pets. For instance, they ARE pets in the Netherlands, and they are shown just like cats and dogs. Here in the 'States, however, having what is deemed a "wild animal" as a pet is in some states illegal. Texas, for example strictly forbids it. . .probably in part because of the rabies issue. Skunks are known carriers of the disease in Texas. Whether or not a vaccine has been developed that will work for skunks as it does for dogs and cats, I'm not sure. I know they don't have one for bats.

There is also the issue of the scent glands. Those can be removed surgically thus eliminating the odor problem, but also leaving your skunk defenseless and entirely dependent on you for it's safety. Removing the glands may require that you make your skunk an indoor pet only.

Can a skunk be litter trained? Will they walk on a leash? Will they dig out of your back yard? Will they get along with other pets and vice versa? All are things that must be considered if you plan to have any pet. Why not skunks?

I noticed that the writer did say "no wild skunks" in Europe. That made me wonder, well, are there "tamed wild skunks" in Europe?
