Orwell would roll in his grave at the rhetorical jiu-jitsu and cognitive dissonance used by the contemporary left. Snark and tu quoque combined allow progressives to never critically think about their own positions, as snarky quips allow them to maintain a self-delusionary position of sarcastic authority without ever taking anything seriously, and when they consider an actual criticism tu quoque flings back whatever criticisms are made allowing them to be morally resolved of whatever behaviour they indulge in.

Really. Over the weekend, I saw this fine bio of Elvis Presley in 1956, and the one person mentioned on that show who would best be described as "urban, white, and progressive"--Steve Allen, HATED both Elvis and rock and roll so, he booked him 'as a joke' and tried to embarrass him by making him sing dressed up as an itenerant hillbilly with straw hat, and then sing "Houng Dog" without his band, but 'lovingly, to a hounddog.' ef him AND them!

Allen was a staunch middlebrow with pretensions to highbrow (unfulfilled), and he was incapable of having what he considered lowbrow talent on his show unless they accomodated his image of who they were. Later on he let Jerry Lee Lewis play the piano with his feet (which I recall as one of the single greatest musical moments of my childhood: it opened up the doors of possibility), so I guess he loosened up a bit. Not a lot, but a bit.

Not surprising, really. The middlebrows always react in a strong negative way against anything that swells up from "below"; it upsets their balance and throws them off; they live in fear of losing control over "standards". The anti-rap reaction is just another example of the same syndrome (Bill Cosby, for example, is an arch middlebrow in a panic state).
