Sure its crap that the Army (and probably Marines) are spinning their numbers, but it suggests that the bloodlust that was so fevered in the population as recently as 2006/2007 has started to wane. That despite a deep recession, our youth is thinking seriously about the mercenary aspects of military recruiment.

I don't think blood lust (or lack there of) has anything to do with this. I think it is more about the mission having no clear objective, and that the will to win from those on the high up seems not to be there. I wouldn't want to play for a team that doesn't seem to want or even try to win, particularly if you might not survive. When the rules of engagement favor the enemy it seems crazy to want to sign up (surprised there are still 70k of them this year).

In 20+ years of military serice I never met anyone who signed up for bloodlust.

From my time in the army, I can tell you that patriotism is a distant second. The main reason anybody enlisted was because they were non college bound low achievers who had nothing better going for them.

Of course that was the peace time pre-9/11 army. It seems like the post 9/11 army drew in a lot more assholes, nimrods and shitkickers.

I could easily imagine bloodlust in the young man I sat next to on a plane a few months ago. He was a very talkative active duty soldier on leave from Afghanistan who told me of his enjoyment of kicking in the doors of the homes of Afghans, whom he also referred to as "hajis" (a term of respect when used respectfully, but also a slur when not used respectfully). He eagerly anticipated the end of his enlistment, after which he would apply for a job at Blackwater/Xe.
