Are Fray Polls allowed here?
by cgScirocco_

If so...I have one.

When Fred Thompson (he's now just "dipping his toe in the lake") decides to finally dive in to the presidential race, which Repub candidate will he siphon the most votes from?

That's a good question cg--and a hard one to predict.

He may never get off of the ground floor and become a viable threat to the current frontrunners. They will likely do more damage to his chances than a chicken dem would in the general election.

I'm thinking polls are fine

And I think that Fred Thompson will most likely siphon votes from.............McCain because they are probably the most similar of the Republican candidates.
Geez I hope so!

They are some of the most interesting and probing posts anywhere. You are normally only asking for a comment or opinion. That seems reasonable to me.

McCain.

It doesn't matter though because Hillary! is winning it all. ;)

Unless Rudy's support is just because they think he's the only one that can beat Hillary, don't see what Thompson has that would pull support away from Rudy. Romney currently leads in Mass.,Michigan and Utah. I don't see Fred hurting Mitt there. Mitt has been doing well in Iowa and SC lately. I can see Fred hurting Mitt in those 2 states. Except for Immigration and the War in Iraq,Thompson's record is pretty much the same as McCain's. I see Thompson hurting McCain the most.

I think to people like you and me, Thompson's "shortcomings" will be made more apparent as time goes on. We will be compelled to talk about these things.

But I also think that there's a whole constituency out there, that have kicked Bush and the Repubs to the curb, but are willing to put their heads in the sand once again, in hopes that this is the guy that can save them.

I still don't think Repubs have a chance in '08, but I think Fred's TV persona plays a bigger role than those pushing for him would like to admit.

My thinking was more Guiliani, since he was/is the most peculiar/questionable of the Repub candidates.

Truth be told...I don't think this country is ready for a woman or a Black President.

We're ready for them to run serious campaigns, but not to actually vote them into office.

I think we're ready for both.

Perhaps with the advances in stem cell research we will soon be able to grow Hillary and Obama new spines?i
The window cut off the question

when I replied the first time.

He siphons from Mitt. Republicans willing to vote for Rudy or McCain, Thompson doesn't make much difference for them. Mitt is the the closest candidate the religo nuts have to vote for. They're nervous over Mitt's Mormonism. They'll flock to Fred.

My guess is Guiliani. It's just based on an overview of how precarious his position is. He's definitely the most "liberal" of the bunch. IMO, the only card he has in his pocket is being the mayor of the city that was attacked on 9/11. He's already tried the "if you vote for Dems, you're gonna die" bit.

He's trying to run on his "terrorism creds", but what are they? He's the dude that put Command Control in the WTC.

Eventually, he's gonna get whopped upside the head with that, repeatedly, IMO.

as I thought about including in my last post--- I think whatever he accomplishes will be by way of exactly what you cite--- the well-known repub attribute of clinging to dreams, as things come apart at the seams.

He can accomplish a great deal in the repub ranks as a empty suit for awhile, but he has next to no organization or money right now.

What I think will kill him more than anything else, is having a wife younger than his daughter. What social conservative will want that as a first lady?

Ready or not.....

That's an easy one

whoever has the biggest lead when he enters the race will lose the biggest part of their support.
