"There's a difference between pedophilia and taking advantage of
somebody who's old enough to be interested in sex but too young to
judge the physical and emotional risks of messing around."
Um...if there is a difference, it's one so small that it fails to register in my (granted) tiny little ladybrain. I know it's insane to say there is something deeply screwed up about a 40-year-old man giving a 13-year-old girl drugs and alcohol, putting her in a situation where she is not only too emotionally immature to evaluate for herself whether a sexual encounter is wise, but in a position where she might feel her lack of compliance could be harmful to her person or her career--in short, where a 40-year-old man coerces a 13-year-old girl into a sexual situation in which she is in no way, shape or form capable of consenting to (we people with vaginas and tiny ladybrains call this "rape"). BUT... I guess that just makes me insane.
And while her reproductive organs might be sufficiently capable of having a menstrual cycle, as most doctors or psychologists will tell you, by no means has a 13-year-old reached "sexual maturity," and emotionally, she is still very much a child. One need look no further than the list of complications and problems that come with 13-year-old girls getting pregnant than to see that she is not sexually mature, regardless of whether she has to buy tampons once a month, or that her brain is still fundamentally that of a child.
How is a 13-year-old who has already started her period any different than 10-year-olds or 8-year-olds who have already started their period (albeit VERY prematurely)? Because girls DO start their periods at that age, and I don't think ANYONE would ever argue that just because they have their periods, it means they are mature enough to be even somewhat culpable in their RAPE by adult men.
This whole piece was absolutely APPALLING. It essentially excuses rape with children, and I can't believe anyone actually believes this sick, screwed up rape apologism, or that anyone at Slate thought it was a wise idea to publish what is quite possible the most depraved thing I've ever read in an established periodical.
