The Nobel Peace Prize can have at least one important effect: it can draw attention to a particular movement or type of good work. I had never heard about microfinance before Muhammad Yunus and Grameen bank won in 2006, and now it seems to be everyone's favorite example of effective poverty alleviation.

Of course, this doesn't apply when the US President or the UN Secretary General wins the prize...
