Banks have been gouging for years
by reJoinder

Obscenely high fees didn't start AFTER the crash, they were fueling that "orgy of spending" in the first place.

Banks are greedy, and will get away with whatever they can. This has been true since the deregulation of banks back in the '80s. Obama should push for Congress to do something to reign them in....but given his performance so far, it's not likely. He's merely continued the payouts of tax dollars to big banking and big business.

Enjoy!

True enough. I remember my mother complaining about those "obscene" fees 25 years ago. This was before they invented this 'overdraft protection' thing, so Dad would (knowingly) write a bad check at the grocery store, which would bounce (twice). He'd get $50 cash today, and pay the bank two $20 fees, and the grocery store one $25 fee plus $50 to cover the check -- and somehow thought that this was perfectly reasonable, since he couldn't get a credit card (bet you can't guess why) and wanted the cash today instead of having to wait until payday. "Only" having to pay a single $20 bank fee instead of three fees totaling $65 would have been a dramatic improvement.
