When Europeans first showed up along the eastern coast of what would become the United States they found it heavily populated. But epidemics introduced by Europeans devasted the Native population and our Pilgrim forebearers had plenty of room to settle down in New England a few years later in the 1620s.
The Natives didn't make good slaves, many refused to work or killed themselves (I read somewhere that some of the surviving Caribs and Arawaks committed suicide by eating dirt rather than work for the Spaniards).
There weren't many left, they were suffering from crushing plagues and over the next 280 years we pushed them West into barren nooks and crannies we didn't want. And the land was rich, free and empty.
WHAT A BARGAIN!
We needed cheap labor so we looked to Sub-Saharan Africa. We imported millions of Africans to work as chattel slaves. The center of the slave import business was Rhode Island. Most of the slaves, however, worked on plantations in the agricultural South.
Then, after the North decided that chattel slavery had become a bigger minus than plus, America freed the slaves and immediately re-enslaved them using ledger books and share cropping.
Then they used apartheid and lynch law to keep the Blacks in the ass end of the economy, working on the cheap and no competitive threat to the majority. This system only gave up the ghost in the 1960s.
WHAT A BARGAIN!
And to augment the cheap labor supplied by Blacks we had immigrants from Eastern and Southern Europe, segregated not by color but by language and culture, not as reliable as Blacks because they eventually assimilated, but useful for a spell.
WHAT A BARGAIN!
After the last shovel full of dirt had been thrown on Jim Crow's grave, it still took the Blacks 10 or 15 years to begin integrating into the mainstream economy. But as luck would have it zillions of illegal Mexicans and the world economy appeared on the horizon at that time.
Now the low paying, dangerous, shit jobs that had to remain in the U.S. could be done by illegal Latinos and the low paying, dangerous, shit jobs that were mobile could be shipped offshore to East Asia or other foreign locales. Color was no longer the factor that maintained a segregated pool of cheap labor. Now it was legal status or compliant foreign governments that kept the labor cheap.
WHAT A BARGAIN!
One day someone will fix the illegal and foreign sweat-shop "problems."
WELL I STILL WANT MY FREE LUNCH GODAMMIT!!
