Dirty hair and blanket policies
by KB01

In the course of my career, one of the most frustrating things to deal with are blanket policies. A true sign of bad management is when there is a very specific issue regarding one employee and instead of discussing the problem with this one employee, a new policy is enacted that impacts everyone. On a fairly regular basis, we receive mass emails or memos from either HR or upper management informing us of new policies, often that are so incredibly specific that they clearly are only directed at one or two people.

As a manager, I know how difficult it can be to repremand a employee (especially one you are close to) and it's easier to cop out and send a directive to everyone but that only tends to PO everyone.

As for the video with the woman with dirty hair... I didn't realize that this would ever be a problem; I don't think I've ever seen anyone (since college) so dirty that it would be disruptive to others.

Would tying hair up really resolve anything in this case? Isn't it still dirty?

Eh.

But if they spoke to the individual, eh, individually... they might suddenly have some weird discrimination lawsuit flung upon their doorsteps...

Or, sometimes the individual in question might have no clue as to the problem and pointing it out to one and all might without mentioning them get them to think about it...

Maybe?
