How do men get that "privacy?"
by JonFrum
A false accusation of a heinous crime gets a pass. The crime must not really be so heinous. I'll remember that.

You don't know that she will be un-punished for her false accusation -- either legally, or in her real life. I'd bet that everyone around her knows what happened, and that those who were quick to offer sympathy are absolutely furious with her. I wouldn't be the least bit surprised to hear that she's explaining her false police report (a crime) to a judge. The prosecutor's office does not want a reputation as a friendly place for liars.

As to the other point: We DO NOT want a government that can secretly detain people. The only functional defense against this is to have them publicly name the people they've arrested. This is for the accused person's benefit, so that you and I can say -- "What the hell?! He couldn't have done that, because he was with me on the other side of town that entire day!" Sure: it's embarrassing. But think about how much worse it would be to get convicted because you were trying to keep your best defense witnesses from hearing about it.

There's a gigantic difference between the government snatching you in the night and nobody knows where you've gone, with the threat if your family complains too much or too loudly about it they might be the next to disappear, then you are off to a gulag with nobody knowing what the charges are, and splashing names and photos **all over the media** and making life real tough for guys just based on one stupid sluts remorse for being such a stupid slut. I'm not sure how this is hard to figure out.

You are of course, referring to Guantanamo, right?

The whole government disappearing you and all that.

A reasonable compromise would be to release the names if and when the case comes to trial.
