Finally, Slate agrees with me!
by FoG

I was definitely one of these kids. When my parents were overbearing with requests and praise, it didn't make me happy, it made me suspicious. I felt I was being bribed and that they weren't respecting me. It also made me feel powerless. Thus, guess what was the only way I could get back to them and prove to myself that I wasn't powerless?

Disobeying everything no matter how easy, reasonable and normal.

People--even kids--don't like to be pandered too. Or at least some of us don't. We're independent and, even as youths, we aren't afraid to say (in one way or another), "Stuff it, Mommy."
