in Emma, Knightely (I think) says that women (meaning of a certain class) are taught handwriting by their governesses and write better than men. Men scramble into any handwriting they can get and don't get formal education about it. Another character comments on how bad handwriting is most of the time and how hard it must be for the postal office to read the addresses.
