Now that Slate has dumped its best feature in favor of a watered-down Daily Beast Cheat Sheet, where do we go now for a quick daily update? The only other daily news summary worth bothering with (at least that I'm aware of) is the Earlybird - it used to be available for free through Government Executive, but it's now gone behind National Journal's very pricey subscription wall.

Can anyone suggest alternatives?

Good idea -- we should search the net looking for someplace to find a good newspaper summary, then post the results here, so that we can find some place to read such a resource, as Slate won't be offering it anymore.
