Sonia is NOT the first Hispanic Supreme Court justice
by cassandra
The first Hispanic on the Supreme Court was Benjamin Cardozo. Since he was also Jewish, it was two for one. My friend Maria Cohen from Cuba will have double reason to rejoice!

no, you're wrong. he isn't.

Cardozo was born in New York City, the son of Rebecca Washington (née Nathan) and Albert Jacob Cardozo.[1] Both Cardozo's maternal grandparents, Sara Seixas and Isaac Mendes Seixas Nathan, and his paternal grandparents, Ellen Hart and Michael H. Cardozo, were Sephardi Jews of the Portuguese Jewish community affiliated with Manhattan's Congregation Shearith Israel; their families immigrated from England before the American Revolution, and were descended from Jews who left the Iberian Peninsula for Holland during the Inquisition.[1] Cardozo family tradition held that their ancestors were Marranos from Portugal,[1] although Cardozo's ancestry has not been firmly traced to Portugal.[2] "Cardoso", "Seixas" and "Mendes" are common Portuguese surnames.

Why isnt he hispanic? Because he was jewish, you anti-semite? there are plenty of latin jews. they are in columbia, panama, mexico, etc. there are even jewbans.

Or dont are you refusing to count those portugese speaking latins as latins? real convenient. In truth in NYC Cardozo has always been regarded as latin. there are plenty of schools and buildings in latin neighborhoods named after him. just a coincidence right.

You have to be the absolute dumbest of the stupid fuck libs who post on this site.

glad for your joy

but jews are always at least hebrews and never a citizen of the land they reside in, right? didn' israel make that offical with all that dual citizen stuff that is still law?

that was a bit mean.

but it does point out the problem with the jews. the exclusitivity of the tribe and its religion in their own eyes and laws. the muslims are worse they go beyond the tribe to encompass any fool that joins in a never ending enslavement to the religion. the final for now prophets were the founders of america whose citizens are members of a tribe with no exclusivity either to those born or chosen.

i look at sotomayer as an american. i am joyful too.

the second dumbest lib douchebag chimes in too. So jews are a "problem" for you and not "american".

You and juliebags, two socialist racist pieces of shit. enjoy

Here's a conservative blog's take on this question. And, another take that suggests Scalia might technically be "Latino."

Simply put, as the term is usually understood, Cardozo was not "Hispanic." Raise your hand if you think "person from Spain or Portugal" when you hear that term. Be honest now. Thought so.

i don't have a problem personnaly with jews, but each country they are in has a problem. if they reject the automatic dual israelis citizenship the problem goes away. if they don't it does not. the individuals are not causing the problem israel is. indeed american jews have sued israel over this very issue.

i'm not a racist. i'm a socialist and proud of that. socialism has worked to provide benefits te people around the world. you, yourself reap that harvest.

i look at you as a fool, try to prove me wrong.

I look at you and see a stupid assipe

The Irish and many other countries allow for dual citizenship and a right of repatriation, and the mexicans come and go illegally across our borders as they please without regard to citizenship but you have no problem with them you lying racist piece of shit anti-semite, hypocrite.

I gotcha douchebag. Youve been outed.

He's not hispanic because Portuguese are not hispanic because they do not speak Spanish. Plus, Hispanic refers to Latin American roots, not Iberian Penisula. Same for Latino.

But I guess for a certain type of person, jut having a certain surname means they must be thrown into a certain group, no matter what the facts are. Or aren't.

By the way, I know of Cardozo HS in Bayside and the law school for Yeshiva U. That's it. And since when is the West Village a Latin neighborhood? Or Bayside?

Common understanding
by Joe_JP

You reference the common understanding of the term, but technically they can be broader. Thus, "Hispanic" comes from "Hispania," the Roman name of the Iberian Peninsula.

She herself, as we know oh so well, calls herself a "Latina," which also vague, if usually meaning of Latin America. But, tricky sorts can say that too can mean more. Scalia even.

It's wordplay at some level, here to vent at "stupid libs."
