Sen. Daniel Inouye & Japanese Americans in WW II
by chuck

I would like to add a bit about one-armed Senator Inouye. He lost his arm fight with the 442 Infantry Regiment, which was made up of Japanese-Americans. While their relatives and loved ones were in interment camps, they became the most decorated regiment of the war. Their motto was "Go For Broke" and they did. We can all be proud of their deeds, and also that they did not lose faith in America despite the wrongs they suffered.

I am very sure that Sen. Rayburn intended to show deep respect, expressed ironically, when he said to the new Senator: "How many one-armed Japs we got around here?"

Yes, I have the movie GO FOR BROKE with Van Johnson as the commander. The troopers are referred to as 'Buddha Heads.' I'm not sure if it was their own term or an army term.

Yep, I'm sure it was his way of joshing Inouye into the club. Kind of a Gran Tourino thing.
