Currently I am 7 months pregnant and I had the Mirena IUD inserted last September. I already have 3 children and this will be my fourth. I talked to my doctor whom I trust greatly and did my research on this product before deciding on using it. So I understood as with ALL contraception that there is still a minimal risk of pregnancy. I am fortunate enough to already have an established family and have been married to wonderful man for the past 10 years but this experience has really shaken us. And not just my husband and myself but the children that we already have. It is not going to be easy for us but we have lots of support. I just worry because the more and more I talk about it with people the more commonly I hear that women are getting pregnant using this method of BC. Some not in as fortunate of a situation as I am in. I guess what I am really saying is it maybe great for use for somewomen but not all. And as for young women using the IUD... I won't recomend to my younger sisters.

But do you have any empirical evidence to offer?

I don't have any empirical evidence but I know of two women who were pregnant within 18 months of having an IUD put in. I realize that statistically it's not an epidemic, but it is enough to make me reconsider.

Well, statistically speaking, it will happen...to about 1 in 100 women. No BC is 100%...
