Sex Ed
by fletc3her
I've never been able to wrap my brain around why the "Pro-Life" group feels the need to oppose birth control and even sexual education in the schools. To me, it changes their stance from the political to the religious. And, it undercuts their alleged core belief since birth control and sex ed classes can reduce abortions.

The sex ed classes I had in school were great. It actually shocks me to read about some of the stuff kids have to go through today. We were taught about birth control, about masturbation, about STDs. However, the core message was always that abstinence was the only sure thing. I can't imagine any teacher not making that clear, whether the state demands it or not.

I went to a Catholic school and we had a decent sex education class. It taught about all of that stuff but then said, oh by the way, you should not masturbate and wait for marriage.

Agreed- these people are just anti-sex religious nutbags. I kind of understand their basic concern. They don't want their kids to sit in a class where everyone is dscussing sex and their kids (who might not have had any sexual experience) would feel like losers who couldn't get any. They don't want kids to feel like 'everyone is doing it'. I wouldn't want sex ed neither if that was th case.

I don't think that's a legitimate concern though. When I went took sex ed as a HS sophomore (and I was most definitely a virgin at the time... and for a long time after that- but let's not go there!), I never felt the least bit awkward. The teacher never asked anyone to raise their hand if they've never had sex before. I thought the material was fascinating (who wouldn't!). It was one of the few classes where I actually read through the entire text book well before they taught it in class. Sex Ed sould be presented in a matter-of-fact manner. Without judgement, but also without encouragement. Nobody should be getting a boy scout award for having sex. At the same time noone sould be castigated neither.

Besides the truth of the matter is, kids are far more influenced by peer pressure outside the classroom than anything else. There is nothing you can do inside the classroom that can counteract that.

I think most religious conservatives are for some sex education and birth control but they argue over the details like parental control, age appropriate material, etc. There is a small subset against both, but most just want control.

For example should 16yr olds be able to get birth control on their own? At what age do you start sex ed? Do you show pornography in sex ed? What about gay sex?

I would imagine that if a 10year old came home and the parents found out they watched a gay sex instruction video in sex ed there would be a riot from parents of all backgrounds at the next PTA meeting.

Liberals tend to argue against parental consent stating that children will no seek these preventive measures if they tell their parents. On the flip side conservative tend to argue that underage children are the parents responsibility and thus the parents need to be involved.

A gay sex instruction video? You're clearly a loon.

Whereas you, gunsmoke, have argued from the most ridiculous strawman imaginable. Seriously, can you find a single school in America where showing 10 year olds a "gay sex instruction video" (where would you even find such a video?) has even been considered?

Re: Sex Ed

Strawman- perhaps, perhaps not. You must consider the fact that many schools want to teach sex ed and are offering GLBT curriculums to K-12 graders. Chicago was going to have a “gay friendly” school, before it was axed, is really that farfetched to think a gay friendly school would have a gay sex education? Google “gay curriculum” and see what you get.

San Francisco is doing this in elementary, middle and high school. <link>

Controversies like these are cropping up with more frequency.

<link>

10th grade + gay sex ed video = <link>

Not just 10th grade, but 8th grade as well. And they cover how to put a condom on and using flavored condoms for oral sex.

<link>

Storybooks, gay wedding field trips, etc. The gay sex ed videos are out there, mostly used in Europe, some US school districts have tried to implement them but have failed after parents protested.

Lets recap

GLBT curriculums- check

Elementry school (K-5Th) gay friendly material- check

Gay sex ed videos- check

Strawman- I don't think so and where to get the video- ask the school board.

Yes, strawman

Nice try there, gunsmoke.

I clicked on every one of your links and didn't find a single reference to a "gay sex instructional video for 10 year olds". A lot of it was simple cultural senstivity training, typical "gays are people too" stuff. No instructions being given to elementary school kids on how to engage in gay sex.

The closest you got was a video for 10th graders, not 10 year olds, on how to use a condom, which could apply to both gay or straight students.

So, fail.

OK.... so "gay friendly" is a scary thought. I mean, heck! What sort of pervert would actually be (gasp!) FRIENDLY to Americans who might be having Incorrect Sex?????
Re: Sex Ed

Well, if gunsmoke is opposed to teaching elementary school kids that gays are human beings and thinks schools should instead teach them that gays are subhuman troglodytes and that if there are any gays in your family, you should cast them out lest their evil gay auras infect you with their gay cooties and condemn you to burn in eternal hellfire just for breathing the same air as they do, they he should just so.

Instead, he invented a silly imaginary strawman in which 5th graders are apparently being shown videos on how to bugger each other on the playground.

Now, granted, just because he completely failed to show one instance of 10 year olds being shown gay instructional videos doesn't mean they don't exist. Maybe that's what they're showing kids in Europe, since as every wingnut knows, all Europeans are gay sissy socialist cheese eating surrender monkeys who are plotting to turn all red-blooded Americans gay by forcing them to accept universal health care.

Besides, he really, really wants it to be true. So there must be some school, somewhere in American that is teaching 10 year olds how to determine whether they are a top or a bottom.

Somewhere. Probably San Francisco. Or Madison, Wisconsin. They're all satanists there, you know.

We Christian parents do expose our kids to the perversity such as homosexuality, murder, infidelity, lying, and other things.Sin is sin.

We teach them what God states and it is up to them to apply it. They will make bad choices, mistakes but they will know what the word of God says and they know that God loves them no matter what and so will us their parents.

You all talk about your own opinions and theories, but in the end its what GOD says.

Hahaha- that's funny. Let's see, your bible features brother-sister incest, father-daughter incest, cousin-marrying, polygamy, slavery, master/slave sex, abortion, condoned rape, human sacrifice, stoning, etc, etc; and you have to gall to complain about anyone else's "perversity"?
