Being a cop is NOT a hard job, it is a cushy union, full pension job that a lot of sub-par people luck into.

Before the alarmist "black crime" hype came in the 1980s whites viewed police as the corrupt, bumbling, unable to get a private sector job screw offs that they are.

Just watch an old episode of "Dukes of Hazzard" or "The Andy Griffith Show".

But now right wingers, who usually hate union and government employees, love cops, because cops are the last line of defense against the blacks and muslims that are going to come and steal their wives.

Any time that people are given a lot of power and no oversight there are going to be problems. Until people stop fearing minorities and realize that nobody is safe from police abuse and corruption the proper oversight is not going to occur.

An awful lot of police work is just community service and a lot of working-class kids get into it from that side, or because they got a taste of it in the military, or because someone in the family does it. Not so many middle-class kids go into it, though I've known youth service types with social work backgrounds who did. There's a career arc that's a lot like social work administration if that's something you can do and you have the brains and social/political skills. But most middle-upper-middle class folks have never known a cop, never lived near one, never babysat their kids and so on.

So it's easy to think they're stupid. It's easy to think that about all working-class people. It's wrong, but it isn't hard to do. The response of the union didn't surprise me: it isn't fun to be looked down on by people who could not do your job but regard you as a mindless goon. That said, there are contexts in which the police go bad: Los Angeles drive-by policing was a recipe for disaster, insurrection and out of control gang culture. The police riots and red squads of the sixties rotted some departments so completely that the turnover by the mid-seventies was total.

There was a great public television documentary on police chiefs (called "Chiefs," I think) and in part of it they followed a reform Superintendant of the Minneapolis PD as he made the rounds of an unpleasant day. He went from station to station, and was treated at best coldly. The journos asked him why, and he told them: "I told them they had to stop beating people up for being rude to them. I can understand their hating me for that, but I had to do it."

Come from a family of cops - and I can assure you, NONE of them come every night, toss off their shoes and immediately engage in family night after their "easy, cushy" job. Nope, none of them - not even the 911 responder who sits on her ass all night answering phone calls and takes shit all night on the phone and listens to folks who are being beaten, shot, and otherwise abused while they're trying to find out what happened and dispatch the proper responders.
