Roundabouts are great, lets start with Yield signs
by reality-based

One of my frustrations with American traffic systems is the lack of yield signs. Most suburban traffic would move faster if the stop signs were replaced with yield signs. There is rarely a car going the other way and requiring a stop wastes fuel and time. Most people don't quite stop anyway. Then there are the rural roads with a stop sign miles from the nearest moving vehicle.

With greater understanding of the yield sign, the transition to roundabouts would be much easier. The few roundabouts that I encounter are a joy to use. They are especially useful for intersections that are not rectilinear.

I agree. And, too many American intersections are equipped with trip lights. A vehicle approaching an intersection trips the other direction's green light to go red, so yours will go green. After you pass, the lights reverse, or they wait for another car from the other direction to trip the lights again. Often this results in one car stopping 6-15 cars to be let in, where a yield or stop sign would do as well. It's an expensive, high tech solution to what should be a low tech, problem. There are various factors, of course, but too often intersections with minimal traffic in two of the four directions will get a traffic light.
