About 20 years ago Omni magazine had an article on lucid dreaming and pretty much laid out the steps Mr. Currey lists, I think they skipped the third one. Intrigued I started to practice it. About 3-4 weeks in it worked. The first time I realized I was dreaming it came as such a shock I immediately woke up. The second time was also a shock but I could feel myself "rising up" toward wakefulness and stopped it, I calmed down. I was then able to maneuver around a while and marvel at the experience. And yes, the next day did pass in a semi-euphoric state. It really is a natural high when you can do it. I was only able to do it a couple more times before the ability faded, I'd like to develop it again though.
The key is the "reality check", remembering to force yourself into developing a new habit that will happen within the dream world. It is very easy to forget to practice this habit. For me it was looking at a piece of text, then looking away for a few seconds and looking back. If it changes, you are dreaming, if it is the same you are awake. While dreaming the world is in constant motion but we simply don't remember or recognize the changes. When we recognize the change, the shock hits.
