Prefer Gunn and Webb over the Nasty English Ladies
by SlateReader

If someone's going to critique the contents of my underwear drawer, I'd take Gunn and Webb over those witchy English broads any day (I watched a couple of episodes of the English version of "What Not To Wear" -- did they commit the same crime in America)?

All of those makeover shows have a creepy American self-actualization by way of consumerism vibe. Although what the image guru said is kind of true: "I can't control how others perceive me; all I can control is how I present myself." (Or words to that effect.) Definitely easier if you have a lot of money to spend on self-presentation, however.

The recommended list of items was very sensible and the subject/fashion victim did look better at the end; I don't always feel that way about makeovers.

Didn't catch the moment with the replacement engagement because I'd nodded off.

Lastly, Tim Gunn has inhabited the world of fashion for 30 years; why wouldn't one expect him to have very strongly held opinions? I might not care about or agree with his views on the proper stiletto height -- I think stilettos are ridiculous -- but I'm not surprised that he has them.

Part of the problem, I think, is that here is a guy telling us that there IS a proper stiletto height.

Absurd, really. It begs for an "Oh, shut up, Tim," response from the viewer.

I just watched the episode featuring a woman who'd lost a lot of weight. She'd pared herself down to a more normal size but was still not anywhere near what you'd call model-thin (a size that probably would have been impossible and unhealthy for her to attain).

Gunn and Webb definitely seemed to appreciate the hard work and commitment this lady had put into losing weight and after the clothing consultation, a new haircut and makeup she looked quite pretty. Again, a pleasant surprise because I find most makeovers are not "makebetters," but "makeworses," where the subject is stripped of all personality and individuality while smothered undered all the styles and makeup colors of the season.

Should have been "smothered under."

Well, I find the show extremely creepy, but the British version less so, and more entertaining as well.

But then, knockoffs seldom match the original (witness The Office)
