Who decided that we needed identificartion numbers?

I don't remember ever having heard of any US president or member of Congress campaigning on assigning ID numbers to their subjects, whoops, I mean citizens. Didn't the sponsors of the Social Security Act publicly assure the voters that Social Security numbers would not be used as ID numbers? It's one thing to get a PIN number from a bank or other institution one voluntarily does business with, it's another to be assigned an ID number by the people we elect to be "public servants" on the advice of people we dont elect who are the faceless bureaucrats who actually control our government. Why do we, the supposedly free citizens of what is alleged to be a democracy allow ourselve to be treated like livestock by "our" government? Are we really that addicted to government handouts, or are we just stupid sheep?

As far as stupid sheep -- speak for yourself. You're the one who finds them unnecessary.

There is a need for a unique identifier of some kind, unless you'd like to be associated with someone else's criminal record, delinquent taxes, civil judgement, dishonorable discharge or a hundred other things, with no way to be able to straighten it out -- ever -- just because they share your name.

Oh god not an id number!! If you're going to complain about the government interfering in your life, you could do much better than SS #'s. They know exactly how much money you make every year. If they wanted to and had reason, they could look in your bank accounts etc etc.

And that's just the government! Think of all the credit card companies keeping track of EVERY SINGLE purchase you've made with them.

yes they did. when i was a wee lad i remember getting my card and the gentleman told me that my number is for them and them only and no other government department would ever have to know my number and it was for the SSA only.

ha!! a few years ago mine was one of the names and numbers that was lifted from the computer of some VA worker. i have not had dealings with the VA since 1974 and have moved about 100 times since.

the VA was nice enough to send the letter, but how did they find me?

By the end of 2005, it should have been apparent that the U.S. economy was fundamentally misaligned. We had significantly overinvested in housing and significantly underinvested in factories, plants, and equipment. In effect, we needed a recession: a period to readjust the balance between the different types of capital.

More broadly, failure is an essential aspect of free markets. Failure shows capitalism is working, because it means resources are moving from bad uses to good uses.
