This is the way it always goes . . .
by the true conservative

During their tenures, Republican leaders are always derided as stupid, incompetent, or possibly evil by self-appointed liberal guardians of the republic. Then, after they are out of office for a few decades, they are pointed back to by these same guardians as the kind of conservatives the current crop should be more like, instead of being stupid, incompetent, or possibly evil.

So, in his lifetime, Goldwater was a nutjob who should have been more like Nixon in his willingness to compromise with liberals.. Then Reagan should have been like Goldwater, and now Bush should be more like Reagan.

I wonder who they will advise to look back to Bush for guidance?

Lol...somehow, I don't think many Republicans or Democrats will look back fondly on Bush as times passes... I, for one, am certainly glad to see the back of Karl Rove. Let's hope the era of the "Consultancy Presidency" ends with G.W. and we can get back to core conservative values again. I'll take an Eisenhower over Nixon, Reagan or Bushes 1 & 2 anyday. ;-)

LOL..I always laugh when people don't appreciate Eisenhower: a man from whom Reagan learned Cold War tactics, launched the Space Race, had extensive military experience, created the Interstate Highway that we all take for granted today. Name one president, Republican or Democratic, who has left more than a rhetorical or scandal-ridden legacy today. There was a reason people liked "Ike," but I'm beginning to realize that people only fifty years ago were probably more intelligent about these things than people are today. We prefer to style to substance and that's why we have Giuliani as our frontrunner instead of an experienced, real Republican candidate who didn't make a national tragedy the overriding theme of their campaign. Give me "Ike" over freaking Giuliani any day.

Don't misunderstand. I've got nothing against "Ike." He just surprised me, is all.

I would take Eisenhower or Nixon again. That faction of Republicans are no more its sad to say. They were populists and from their experiences, abhored war.

Reagan & the Bush's represent a complete break from them.
