I wonder about some of the "research" being done using animal subjects. Much of it goes on for years and years, with no conclusive results. The grants keep coming, though.

NIH funding level for grant is less than 10%, so I wouldn't say grants that don't produce results continue getting funding. In fact in the current climate, many grants that do produce results are not getting renewed.
