Oh Jeez . . .
by lump516

How about a few days in the life of, say, the life of a secretary to one of those high-end customers of our heroine, or maybe a firefighter, or schooteacher. Someone who isn't an empty hustler--that might even include bankers (occasionally).

Or, here's a novel idea--show the protitute or her clients doing something that isn't slickly soul-less, like oh I don't know, talking with someone on the subway or having a fight with their wife, ANYTHING to remind you that these are human beings, not simply figures in a pre-determined landscape. But that would bring this film out of the burnished cocoon of Heartless Money, and waht's the fun of that?

In my conversations with psychotherapy clients who have worked in prostitution the relationships between them and their clients are often more complex than a simple exchange of money for sex. The "girlfriend experience" has been at times mutual and can feel rewarding. These women that I spoke with have not been working with "high end" clientele, and from the sounds of things the men have been generally leading marginal lives similar to the women, or are elderly or infirm. Desire for affection has been as big of a motivator as money or fulfilling drug habits. Overall, there seemed little "abstracted" about their lives. I don't claim to speak for these women or women who have worked as prostitutes in general, but I have to agree that the tired metaphor of prostitution as capitalism in film also serves to keep these women more marginalized.
