Dayo! I say Dayo!
by here2help

Dayo, you are austensibly, a journalist. Not a respected one to be sure. You are writing for an unfashionable "new media" outlet, and in a decidedly below the fold section of this outlet at that. But surely, you do not need an editor to tell you that the phrase "Ooh, snap" has no business in any form of political opinion piece. Indeed, has no place in writing of any sort and really should not be found anywhere but bounding unbidden from the lips of a shocked and awed lower middle class eighth grade girl who has somehow been transported to the present day from 2004 when such children still used that exclamation.

You are ostensibly writing in English, no? There is no word, "austensibly," in that language.

Ooh, snap!

hmmm, and here i thought here was talking about JANE Austen! I have read her a lot, and i couldnt remember that in her books, so i was kinda confused! ty for straightening that out for me! ;)

<giggles>

really, tho, the umbrage at hip, young, terms marks here as more of a fuddy-duddy than Austenerism does...

All this about a post that includes the phrase, "real, live hoisting on their own petard," as well!

These are the kinds of things that try my agnosticism.

If you're going to criticize someone's grammar or style, you really should proofread your own piece to ensure that you have not misspelled (or made up) words, used run-on sentences or sentence fragments, and put all the commas in the right place.

no, i really shouldnt...

i dont criticize ppls grammar or style except when they are being all unctuous and snobbish, and try to show how erudite they are, and even in this case (and one in another post), i just made a joke, not attacked them (which i have certainly seen happen plenty of times)

i write for a living, and can write in a formal way, but generally when i post in boards i am mostly just trying to get some thoughts out quickly, not write an essay or letter to the editor or whatever...and in general i really dont care how other ppl write or spell as long as i understand what they are trying to say with out going thru it 50 times...i mostly look at ppl's positions and ideas and rationales, not how proper their grammar is or how well organized their writing is!

take cares, sweetie! :)

Well guessed, I did think that was the derivation, Austen's characters being so concerned with maintaining outward appeances and living in austentatious homes. I had thought it was a rather modern word, like "Orwellian." Does anyone know the derivation of ostensibly? I can't seem to find the root.

I do not take umbrage with the young and hip using their own terms, but rather with those who are no longer young and likely never hip continuing who use terms the hip employed when they were young, and doing so in what is supposed to be paid professional writing. Further, fuddy duddies are somewhat endearing, I am a pedant.

Well, I believe everything I read in wikis, so I may not be the best person to answer, but it seems to be, via French, from the Latin 'ostendere' meaning to show (further, from 'obs-' and 'tendere,' to stretch in front of). It is related to ostentatious.

Thanks messageboardterrorist. I could not find that. I tip my hat to a superior pedant or pedantess.
