Legislative Oversight
by katanko

My concern is that the program is abused to suit the political agenda of anyone with enough clout to submit a name for monitoring. If you question The Jones Act financial relationships of members on the Defense Committee with DOD contractors such as AMSEA your questions could be justification for an inquiry being made into your background. At one time, not too long ago, the names and addresses of the Board of Directors of AMSEA were available on the web pages. Employees of the company and their families could present questions to the Board Members. The Board used the secrecy of the Jones Act to conceal circumstances surrounding the death and misplacement of the remains of Captain Joseph Coluzzi from his family. Those Politicians in Congress with direct financial involvement in the company refused to reply to the families inquiries- citing national security reasons, but in 1998 there were no security issues preventing the AMSEA Board from responding to the family on Saipan. However, the financial control of the Captain's assets did benefit everyone other than his wife. Sometimes National Security is cited as a cover up of more serious issues. The consideration of Merchant Vessels as being in the domain of national security should at least merit the vessels being armed if the argument of national security has any merit at all - the Board of Directors names and addresses (even a PO Box) should be required by law on the webpage as it is with most Department of Defense Contractors in order that widows and family members can obtain information from the company. It is also interesting to learn which military procurement officers serve on the Board of companies which contract with the Department of Defense and which Politicians have financial stocks or stock options in the companies which they are supposed to consider in the capacity of oversight. Financial influence might be a reason for the secrecy surrounding DOD Preposition Vessels. It seems reasonable to assume our nation is not well served by Foreign Influence in the Preposition fleet, how can we determine which Senators are receiving benefits from foreign shipping interests without full disclosure of all of their family assets? Do financial interests outweigh the importance of unbiased safety inspection and compliance with union contracts? Could we appoint a commission to describe in detail AMSEA's Board of Directors relationship with members of Congress and military officers who served on the Board of the company less than 4 years after leaving service?

When will the remains of Joseph Coluzzi be returned to his widow?
