Kirk Douglas?
by kati
Hey what happened?! I used to have a crush on Kirk Douglas and now his son looks older than he did (though still younger than me!)

Sure, but you have to remember, Kirk had the very rugged looks. Michael was a pretty boy. Pretty boys don't typically age quite as well as the rugged ones do. I mean, rugged turns to old and rugged. Pretty just gets old.

Hear, hear. It has to do with bone structure. Also with lifestyle. Papa Kirk famously remonstrated with Junior about letting himself go . . .and this was probably 15 years ago, at least. (Or before the first of MD's face lifts.) I find our LW's fixation on MD to be quizzical, to say the least. Yeah, I had my 15 minutes or so during "Romancing the Stone" when I thought to myself "Hey, he's really kinda cute." But that was now over 25 years ago. (or when his current bride was in about the 5th grade back in Wales.) It's not just the getting older--Sean Connery has a good 15 years or more on MD and I'd still do Sean--with pleasure. It has to do with resembling the gekko from the Geico commercials more with every passing year. Sean's famously rugged looks are still intact, as far as I am concerned.

MD has always struck me as weak, both in the limp parts he has chosen and how he has conducted his personal life. His voice might be the weakest feature of all, which is why it boggles the mind that he was chosen as the new voiceover for 'NBC World News Tonight'. WTF??

I don't respect weak and it doesn't turn me on. If the LW is going to obsess about a Hollywood actor, she could at least choose one who will age with her, not one who's ready for the remake of 'Coccoon'. There really is no accounting for taste, is there?

Naw, CZJ is older than that Hikari. I mean, that would make her ... about my age. And I haven't had any work done and certainly don't feel like I need it at all! (She is considered a recipient of good plastic surgery by awfulplasticsurgery.com, a site I HIGHLY recommend) Still, she's way younger than him.

And I'm about ready to see people looking their ages and acting their ages (as in, no more 35 yo women playing mothers of 22 yo men although their roles call for them to be playing older and younger) in H'wood.

Even after his stroke, Kirk Douglas looks better than his son. That's scary

Well, Space, let's do the math, shall we? One thing I have always found kind of charming about the Douglas-Zeta-Jones connection is that they share the same birthday, November 25th. It's the 25-year age span that I find a little more mystifying. Not on his end, of course, but on hers. If she purposely mated with a man 2 and a half decades older than she in order to boost her career (yeah, like that's never happened in Hollywood before), she might have chosen someone more appealing. But, again, it's all a matter of taste. I cop to being deeply cynical about that marriage, may God forgive me. That shared birthday (and his money) must have been downright irresistible. Mike's DOB: November 25, 1944. (age 64) Cathy's DOB: November 25, 1969. (age 39) Romancing the Stone was released in 1984, which is the same number of years between MD and his bride ago. But you're right--my off-the-top of my head guess was off by a few years. She wasn't 10; she would have been 15, which would have made her a freshman in high school, while Mr. Douglas was her current age--pushing 40. Had they met back then, it would have been serious jailbait time. I'd like to believe it's true love, really I would, especially seeing as they have 2 children together. I'd feel a little better about it if Ms. Zeta-Jones weren't so close in age to Mike's 30-year-old son, the child by the wife Mike dumped after she began to look 'old'. Whatever. I can't have been the only person watching "No Reservations" who, upon witnessing the very convincing onscreen chemistry between CZJ and Aaron Eckhart idly wondered if La Zeta ever has her regrets about tying herself down to such an old geezer, Hollywood mogul or not. It must have been a treat to make out with someone her own age, if only onscreen. For the record, Mr. Eckhart just turned 41 last month.
