Pressing the Reset Button on Afghanistan

obama plans to send 4,000 military trainers to Afghanistan in the fall, which will be on top of the additional 17,000 combat troops the president authorized last month and "hundreds" of U.S. civilian officials

Sound familar?

I wonder where all the "anti-war" people are, did they leave the planet? or is their outrage selective, only to be applied when it has a political benefit?

What about obama? didn't he use the two wars as a political issue and didn't he state that he would "end the wars"? or was he just using the war issue to his advantage? Oh, sorry, I forgot he didn't say when he would end them!

So there is no misunderstanding, I am not talking about the merits of war up or down, I am only pointing out how some people will use a serious issue like, America sending armed forces to fight and die for us, for their political advantage of the moment.

your a goddamn liar

so what the hell are you trying to say, eh?

obama never said that he would end the wars. he said he wauld get the troops out of iraq. he is doing that. he said he would destroy al qaeda and usama bin ladin. looks like he is going to keep that promise.

your are so talking about the war and using that babble as a political statement.

your a no good hypocrite.

iwasme My point was clearly stated, read my last para....did the anti-war people have selective outrage? and didn't obama and others use war as an issue? and didn't obama imply "end the war" with his statements?....I'm not being critical of what obama is doing, I think we should dispatch those bastards asap. I am pointing out how the war issue was used politically by some, and in my opinion, wrong to do so.

You need to stop having that "reflex reaction" of defending obama any time some one says some thing you don't like....and the anger.....how old are you, grow up.

Obama did not say he would end the "wars." He opposed the invasion of Iraq, for obvious reasons, and indicated his intention to end that war. If you paid any attention to what he said, he was never anti-war the way most of us on the left are. He always displayed a hawkish side, esp in Aphgan, as he made clear during the campaign. Of course, HIllz and McCain are far to his right and even more hawkish.

There is no selective outrage. Most of us are against continuing the quagmire in Aphgan, but the Oman spoke at length before the election about his intention to send more troops and to deal with Pakistan in more agressive manner than Bush had. If you remember, he got into trouble to suggesting we bomb Pakistan.

You are conflating 2 different things. The iraq occupation and colonization has always been indefensible, but there was at least some obscure rationale behind Aphgan.

You have mistaken Pope Benedict XVI's words for Obama's

Pope Benedict the XVI is calling on the world to “end all wars.”

LORENZAGO DI CADORE, Italy - Pope Benedict XVI called Sunday for an end to all wars, describing them as “useless slaughters” that bring hell to Earth

Benedict, speaking from this small mountain town where he has been vacationing, recalled that 90 years ago his predecessor Pope Benedict XV urged a similar end to the first World War, then ravaging this part of northern Italy

“While this inhuman conflict raged, the pope had the courage to affirm that it was a ‘useless slaughter,’” Benedict said. “These words — ‘useless slaughter’ — contained a fuller prophetic value that can be applied to so many other conflicts that have cut off countless human lives. .... ”

95% of the antiwar protestors were protesting about Iraq, a conflict we didn't need to go into and was apparently fought with the aim of maximizing american casualties by a bunch of incompetent unrealistic blowhards who couldn't find the bathroom if they were super glued to the toilet seat. Most americans supported the move into Afghanistan, although some didn't, and then stood initially puzzled but accepting as the bush administration swung its attention towards Iraq and then betrayed and angry as the full scope of what had been done to them and our country became apparent. There were always some americans who didn't think going into afghanistan was the right thing to do, there was a significantly higher number who opposed iraq, grouping both groups together blurs the very real and troubling concerns we, as a nation, have about the war in iraq and the reasons for it.

Where were you last year? In a bunker somewhere? Here's what those of us who were paying attention already knew:

Obama uses crucial foreign tour to promise more troops for Afghanistan
The Guardian, Monday 21 July 2008

Barack Obama flew out of Afghanistan yesterday at the end of a two-day visit with a warning that the country's position in the war against the Taliban and al-Qaida was "precarious" and "urgent".

Obama has promised that, if elected president in November, he will send 10,000 more US troops to Afghanistan to bolster the 36,000 already there and intends to press European countries to become more engaged in the fighting.

Where did Obama promise to "end the war" in Afghanistan? Or are you just trying to drum up some political benefit based on a falsehood?
