Larry Situation
by rzednik
Granted no 14 y.o. girl should be subjected to a peer "harassment", the writer, school, and even Ms. Prudence should be educated on Asperger's Syndrome. What the write described was classic Aspie behavior and our society had better sooner rather than later become enlightened. Hopefully the boy has a diagnosis and the admin is aware of his quirky habits and can resolve the situation. I am surprised this one got past Ms. Prudence.

The letter states, "He often said off-topic things in the middle of class and made inappropriate comments. I was nice to him, so teachers paired me with him for every group project." It sounds like he's already in special ed with modifications. Bringing this to the attention of the teachers won't get him in trouble; it will make them alter his modifications to include some (more?) social skills training.

I thought of Asperger's Syndrome before I finished the letter--did this really slip past Prudence, or did she think it imprudent to make such a call?

Even if he does have Asperger's, that doesn't change the girl's right to feel safe in her school.

Alerting the adults in authority that things are not right is still the best thing to do. Whatever the boy's situation, he needs to understand that no means no. If he has Asperger's, it just means he has to learn this lesson a different way.
