Internet hate crimes...legal departments...liabilities
by justoffal

I now understand what I did not two days ago. Whether by design or by consequence this place has become a stink pit in they eyes of the landlords who are busy just trying to stay in business never mind baby-sitting a pre-school bitch slapping contest. It occurs to me that the nature of the complaints going into WAPO and SLATE were sufficiently bothersome to garner a strong response to the mayhem or the inferred mayhem that has been taking place here.

There is such a thing as an Internet Hate crime law...people can be prosecuted, fined or even jailed for crimes committed on the net. I am aware of at least one case involving chat boards that ended in a sizable reward after a law suit.

If, as I suspect....the nature of the deluge of complaints that are flowing down to WAPO carry with them the slightest whiff of liability you can be sure that we are living on nothing more than borrowed time here.

well jo nothing much happened to you or predicto, who comedic-like states he is in "The Biorple Falls Militia" and repeatedly posted he wasn't serious at all about the stuff he wrote about Obama.

Yet, some wanted his head on a platter....and someone wanted him reported to The Secret Service of all crazy things when he was clearly spoofing and admittedly so.

In fact someone did post here that they did report and you and DB (God only knows what for), to the Secret Service.

That was just awful,justoffal(pun intended).

But you see cranks really don't ever get far when indeed they are nothing but cranks. You're still okay and you're still here despite the gang up on you.

Thank God there are some professionals who do occasionally have the sense to cut through the BS here.

I deleted my other post, because that had all been said before. Those who know and care already know about it.

So,better to just keep focusing on posting on topical and political issues and ignore the ones who bait you as best as you can.

The Secret Service investigation was a pain in the butt.

And I'm hardly surprised that they concluded there was nothing serious going on here. But yes, we had to have lawyers deal with the subpoena and tech staff deal with the IP logs.

That's what I figured. Thanks for letting the fray know.

Of course they have to check on all threats but thankfully are wise enough to cut through what is a crank charge of danger and a real threat.

Eventually, I would guess those who make false charges must eventually either be ignored by people like The Secret Service, or those who make the false charges investigated for causing them to waste their time.

I know the Fire Depts. and Police Depts. arrest people for making constant false complaints, after a point.

Anyway, glad it's over and cleared up.

Thanks again for posting this to jo.

used to post on the old fray...your posts were brief but they almost always dealt with some fascinating existential issue. I still have a picture of a fortyish computer programmer sitting at a coffee shop staring out the window at dusk. The fray had an almost mystical ambience to it then that just can't be captured by this new fray.

What I am having real trouble with right now is the verbal whoopin some of the posters here seem determined to heap on to you....they don't get that you stopped in here to do us a favor.... I didn't get it at first either...but I sure do get it now.... What was it that you failed to do that they wanted you to do???

I'm just a dick. For right or for wrong, for good or for bad, I no doubt deserve it.

I y'am what I y'am. I've made my peace with it. Which probably makes me such an effective dick.

Good luck with your endeavors...

Wherever we all end up I suspect we will drag this place along with us in one way or another..one of the most enchanting lines I ever heard or read was used in an episode of the Waltons years agon to explain the haunting memories of who we used to be and what we go on to become.

" When I stare at the empty meadow now I can see and hear the Ghosts of the children that we were running, laughing and living without any idea of the life that would soon enough supplant those happy times with the more somber realities of our future..."

Peace

I haven't dissed the place; but, I am not a big supporter of this fraycentric situation. I do not need BOTF as there are the other places to post on the other boards of Slate. Where I am now on other blogs, I can talk economics with a poster who worked as staff for Summers, a financial expert who is published, a SS expert who has depth in knowledge, another economist who worked for the CIA that I can discuss participation rate and bls stats, etc.

The people are nice here and I will miss them if the place is swallowed up; but again, life will go on. I have paid the price here in attempts to make it better, the same on Moneybox, and the same on The Bottom Line.

Justoffal, did someone leave a pod next to you bed last night?

That "someone" was crowing about it recently, he goes by

Chevy, but you once knew him as Arizona Jim. Imagine anyone finding offense at Dd. Some folks just have no sense of humor I guess. I mean, this is the damned sewer of the internet.
Hey run....

Good to hear from you....

I have no explanation for why I still post here on BOTF. Maybe it's the nagging feeling that there is so much to learn here and I'm not about to let ill will chase me away from it.

A pod buddy? You lost me there.

Now I see..

No. I am still the same conservative red neck that I have always been. As you know, having known me for five or six years now I am always willing to look on the other side of an issue. Sometimes you find your answers when your not looking for them. This just happens to be one of those times.
