I like this poem by Denny
by JackDallas
+2 Reply

Where human habitation is sparse,
nature's voice is revealed . . ..
. . . the calls and responses.
Water's answering reflections
. . . to the hemlock and birch.
"Here we are," the trees seem to sigh.
But of course, it's only the wind,
and the cry of a hawk,
. . . circling high above.

I like it almost as much as I do the version by the actual author.

A CALM IN THE MINNESOTA WILDS

What is your point,Jack? Denny posts poems and I doubt that he took credit. Why do you have to be this way? Denny is the kindest man on the board and we all like him.

MaryAnne wrote the following post at 01/20/2009 7:07 AM: What is your point,Jack? Denny posts poems and I doubt that he took credit.

He posted the poem and put his name at the bottom of it. That seems to me like he is taking credit for it.

Denny is the kindest man on the board and we all like him.

I like him too, but he steals other people's work and posts it as his own. That's called plagiarism, MA.

Jack

Not only did he NOT give attribution,
by catnapping

he claimed the work for himself...he put HIS name and yesterday's date at the bottom.

<link>

Why do pretend that he doesn't steal, MaryAnne. He's been doing this for years and years...do you remember C.J.F. ? He actually posted one of HIS poems on the P-fray...not realizing that the author was also frequenting the same board!! And that was back in 2001...there are scores of copyright violations and incidents of plagiarism, since..

I know Geoff and Kevin were forced to delete works of his after receiving complaints from the actual authors...

Re: Not only did he NOT give attribution,

Cat,no one but you and Jack seem to want to keep a feud alive. Knock it off and come into the present. Most of the posters on this board do not care about your silly complaints from the Poetry board.
BTW,I thought you swore never to post on KFS again. Now,if i wanted to go back we could call you a ,uh,er,

REALLY,WHO CARES?

who cares?
by catnapping

how about the poets and columnists he steals from? they care. they care enough to complain to the freditor and slate every time he pulls this shit.

these are not silly complaints. this is theft, plain and simple...

this is denny pretending thoughts that never occured to him. this is denny pretending talent that he never possessed. this is denny accepting praise for work he never did.

the fact that you are willing to let it pass with a "who cares?" says a lot about your moral standards.

Re: who cares?

Cat,I have no intention of getting in a pissing contest with you. Remarking about my character does not phase me coming from you.

Jack's post was mean spirited, and it was meant to be.

Jack was doin' his job...
by catnapping

Some of us belong to groups and committees for the sole intent of putting a stop to plagiarism. I belong to one, and contribute to another (on-line), I'm sure Jack does too.

Of course you're not going to "get into a pissing contest." You know fucking well that Denny is a plagiarist, and you have no defense for that. So what can you do other than to pretend that this is somehow Jack's fault and mine. Too fucking funny.

and you're right. this forum isn't worth my effort. i rarely come here, but when someone sends me links of plagiarism examples, i will do my job. i will say something out loud, and i will tell others, including the author...just as i have been doing since 2003.

buh bye.

REALLY,WHO CARES?

I care, and neither Cat nor I (I think I can speak for Cat) give a rat's ass whether or not the morons at KFS care about Denny's plagiarism. We do, and will continue to point it out when it occurs.

He posted one of my poems once after changing the name. You cannot trust someone who copies and pastes other people's work and does not give proper credit.

Now I ask you; what would have been wrong with Denny posting and dedicating the poem to the two people he posted it to, and giving the author's name?

Jack

Who cares? People of honor.
by Mister Fatface

People who respect art, artists, and the creative process. People who respect the law and other people's property. People who don't lie, steal and cheat. People who don't think that objections to lying, stealing, and cheating are "silly complaints" or "feuding".

A few days ago, this same "Denny" posted another poem here which I thought I sortof recognized, but he said it was his own work when asked. The string was called "For the 'oldsters' here...", from 1/16. Now I double checked and guess what?

"Denny" called his poem "Life's Adventure". The wonderful Joyce Maxtone Graham, AKA "Jan Struther", published a poem called "The Last Adventure" in 1940. She died young. She also wrote the wartime novel "Mrs. Miniver", which was made into a movie with Greer Garson, who won the Best Actress Oscar.

From "Denny's" Adventure---

You the supple and young of limb, you think yourselves
the great adventurers of life, and we
who have known the scourge of years gone by
Now in the winter of our days, with the last leaves
Falling from our branches as the sap runs more slowly.
But I will tell you, you do not know the adventures of age.

You, who wonder at each new encounter,
And marvel at that which to you is fresh
Skimming wildly above the surface of life
Cannot comprehend our quickened perception,
As we drink deeply, perhaps one last time
Of all the now familiar beauties of life.

You are lusty in love, yet you have never held a woman
More closely than we hold onto life, its slender thread
Seeking always to escape our grasp, tugging
Trying to raise us off the ground and carry us away
And we, bound to hold on with all our might
To hold her close and keep her near.

From Jan Struther's "The Last Adventure"---

You think yourselves the adventurous ones, you young ones,
And us becalmed, torpid, our days uneventful,
Our blood stagnant, our minds' antennae blunted:
But I, who was young but now am old, can tell you
There is no adventure like the adventure of age.

No zest of pioneer in a new country,
No quiver and shock of beauty first-time-tasted
Can match our sharpened zest, our quickened perception,
Who, at each day's encounter with familiar beauty,
Ask ourselves, "Is this for the last time?"

You are lusty in love, but you never held woman dearer
Than we hold life, our slim one, our slender darling,
Our sweet, fleet, fickle and false tormentor,
Who stands always on tiptoe, poised to leave us,
Bound to us only by the strength of our will to keep her.

Shame on you, "Denny", and shame on you, Mary Anne, for asking "Who cares?".

Re: who cares?
by Boss Greer

I care. Plagiarism is wrong.

Denny should be ashamed. MA, You should be ashamed of him.

That he's a nice person isn't pertinent to the question.

Thank you.

When I saw your earlier post, I did a quick search, and didn't find anything. I'm glad you've posted the original work.

Just part of it. And Denny changed some stuff around too,
by Mister Fatface

as well as copying some phrases exactly, but kept the over all idea. Which proves his wish to steal and take credit, to me for one. Not just posting the original and forgetting to give credit!

I knew I'd read "our quickened perception" before with the theme of life and death and youth. And "lusty in love". The whole Struther poem has five stanzas like "Denny's" too---google "The Last Adventure" with "Jan Struther". keep the quote marks.

Re: Just part of it. And Denny changed some stuff around too,

Several years ago Denny posted a poem and claimed it as his own, but like you I recognized the poem from high school. It was a poem by James Whitcomb Riley entitled: He is Not Dead He is Just Away. I called him on it, just as i did today.

Another time he posted a poem that was even more familiar to me because it was one of mine. He had changed the name and posted it in its entirety.

Jack

You're in good company, Jack.

Remember the U2 lyrics? And John Denver?

I remember once on BOF, he took someone's entire essay (looked like a term paper, and posted it...minus 3, maybe 4 words.

When I suggested it was plagiarized, he called me a few names, and said absolutely it was his work...so, I posted the essay in its entirety...with links to and from his post and the essay...the entire post was a series of about 30 links.

Poor Denny. That reeeeeeeeeally pissed him off.

Anymore, I assume the contents of posts (unless poorly written) are stolen until proven otherwise.
