Will We See This on Letterman?
by Greg J

I saw the fumbling of the oath and really find it is simply a human moment where two of the most intelligent men in the world, both Ivy League law school graduates, made a mistake at a high pressure moment. They are both human, which is a good thing. Even very powerful persons make mistakes. If they had not been nervous, I would be more disappointed. It happened. It's over. Mr. Obama is now president. Now the hard part - governing.

I would like to see David Letterman show this on his show tonight although I do not believe he has the intellectual integrity to do so. He took great delight in ridiculing a sitting president every night, as if that was a great service to the country he was providing. I generally enjoy Letterman but would always turn away when this segment of the show was on.

Will Letterman have the guts to show Pres. Obama, who unquestionably is one of the most inspiring orators of our time, stumble on the oath? My instincts tell me no.

Good luck, President Obama, and God Bless the United States of America.

Obama didn't realize Roberts had forgotten the words, so the first time Roberts paused he started...when you're supposed to recite back to someone the words they say to you, but they don't say the right words, well...it was awkward, I thought more embarrassing for Roberts, but it's done.

Anyone know when the economy will start to turn around?

Well said my friend . During the Election , how many jokes did you see about McCain/Palin compared to Obama/Biden ? Oh I almost forgot , it's not wise to ridicule the Chosen One, so sorry . When are we going to start asking why Obama has all of us eating out of his hands?

northern tide, people have been asking that question: the answers are his brilliance, his integrity, his style, his calm and poised demeanor, his policies, his beautiful rhetoric, his ability to lead by inspiring rather than bullying.... and that's just a few points to start. Really, this nonsense that people think he is the Messiah is generated the press and the right wing who were seeking ways to diminish a candidate. That day has passed and now we can see how he measures up as President. I, for one, have very few doubts. He may not be the messiah, but he'll totally rock as president!

You are right. We won't see this on Letterman because the ultra-liberal media would treat it as sacrilege. In fact exhibit A is Slate, who true to form, spun it that only Roberts screwed up. Someone will have to confirm for me that Letterman doesn't show this clip of his eminence Hussein Obama failing at the one skill he's supposed to be infallible at: public speaking. That's because I refuse to watch Letterman anymore after the biased and unwarranted attacks of John McCain and Sarah Palin on his show. That was the ticket of real change the brainwashed masses couldn't see (or the imaginary people and ghosts signed up by Acorn shut out). By the way, I used to watch Letterman regularly.

I could see Letterman playing off this between himself and Paul. It could work, though it may not be much of a premise.

Letterman probably won't show this on his show ...the Great Moments segment was really just a commentary on the bumbling idiot "W' ....come on people it was funny ...strangely I was drawn to it but it just made me angry that the people of this country let that fool have a key to the oval office.

The Great Moments in Presidential Speeches segment started when Letterman hired a new head political writer who just happened to publish books full of "Bushisms" and various cases where Bush mangled the English Language. Coincidence? I doubt it. It was probably from that writers private collection.

I think they will struggle to find ways to make fun of Obama, but it will take a little while. They didn't even make fun of Bush immediately. In fact, it didn't really start to become regular until his approval ratings dropped.

The problem is its easier to make fun of a religious, southerner that "talks funny" than a admittedly well-spoken minority who is currently popular. Thats why every little Bush goof was made into a joke while Obama's "57 states" comment went unnoticed. If it had become a regular joke, it would probably be seen as, at worst, racist, and at best, mean to the popular minority politician.

They have to figure it out though, because political humor is a big part of their show. Its going to be tough though.

Actually, "the problem," as you say, is that it is easier to make light of someone's fumbling, clueless speaking style when that style is the rule (such as Bush), rather than the exception (such as Obama).

Thats a partisan interpretation. I'm trying to look at it fairly.

Bush has given many great speeches. I would say that he is more inclined to make a mistake than most public speakers, but to say its a "rule" is overstating it. The fact is, if you follow *anyone* around with cameras and reporters 24 hours a day, you will have endless amounts of flubs, errors and mistakes on film. The reaction to it is different depending on who the speaker is. Consider the year of the campaign... Obama and Biden made many gaffs ("57 states," "stand up" to the man in the wheel chair, saying there was TV during the great depression, "redistribute the wealth," mixing up Presidents during the great depression, etc, etc.) but almost nothing was said about it. You pretty much had to be a news junky to see anything about those gaffs.

Another example... "Nucular." A researcher not long ago went through hundreds of speeches from various public speakers over the last 60 years or so. This includes Presidents, Scientists, Lawyers, etc. Nearly all of them - at least part of the time - pronounced nuclear as "Nucular." Nearly every President regularly did it with the exception of only two (Bush Sr and.. I forget who.. maybe Carter?). However, which President is routinely made fun of for saying "Nucular"? Bush alone. The author also noted that Bush often said it correctly. So again, the idea that its a "rule" goes out the window.

1. It wasn't Obama who stumbled.

2. Everyone has seen it, so there really isn't any point in showing it again and it wouldn't be funny. Don't quit your day job for the comedy circuit quite yet.

Carter was trained as a nuclear engineer, so I'm pretty sure he could pronounce it. Clinton used the word correctly as well.
