One-Trick-Poney-Boy-Toys-for-Tots, balh, blah, blah,
by Philip H
It's stated that Diablo Cody's 'limitation' is... Limitation suggests an endless well-spring of talented material is restrained or kept from being produced. I am not sure that Cody can be lumped-in (in any way) with Mamet, et al. Mamet, for example, has a crisp and stylistic prose that doe snot rely on dating the material with current hip-kiddo references. Will Cody be the creepy tattooed octogenarian paying youngsters to hang out with her and talk? Her reliance on snarky, foul-mouthed, up-to-the-minute bombs to elicit laughs, pathos, etcetera, is doomed to have her run afoul of those she portrays in no time. Somewhere there are kids laughing at her take on their sentiments.

Rewarding Juno with the best screenplay Oscar showed the Academy's willingness to create buzz for quirky commercial features, rather than rewarding writing as an art, which I guess I always thought it was about.

Exactly. I desperately hope this kicks off yet another round of JUNO-bashing from all of us, with a few small and overmatched tremulous voices raised in defense ("I really liked JUNO and you can all go eff yourselves!") - which, more than a year on, I still can't get enough of.

"Will Cody be the creepy tattooed octogenarian paying youngsters to hang out with her and talk?"

The thought of that happening just made my day. Thank you so much.

"One trick pony" and the tyranny of the non-professional
by TheChemist

It's REAL easy to call someone a one trick pony when all they've done is one movie.

Have you read her book, "Candy Girl"? It's pretty good. It's written in a very wry style that doesn't rely on "hip-kiddo" references. Plus, its about being a stripper, so win-win!

Seriously though, I remember when Damon and Affleck won the best screenplay Oscar, and the blowback then was also also hate-filled and jealousy-inspired. Did they turn out to be "one-trick" (especially Damon)? Would you rather they were still anonymous Boston nobody's with no contributions to film?

Give the lady a chance to have a body of work! Then you can judge her...

Good Will Hunting is an average screenplay, and Juno just plain sucked

I did read CANDY GIRL. First, it's not a novel. It's her memoir. Second, it was well-written but shallow. It showed the same horrific flipness and ignorance as this TV series about sexual assault.

And there are plenty of writers who are judged by only one work. Cody's memoir only sold at all because it was about sex. She only got her chance to write a screenplay because Reitman read her sex blog. Let's be real about this.
