Good news, everyone!

I've resigned!

Seriously, I will be moving on to bigger and better things at the end of the month. While I could surely say a lot about our time together, this is probably one of those occasions when less is definitely more.

I recognize I've done you guys a great disservice over the last year and a half or so - if I had been more realistic with my time management, I would have left a long time ago.

Fortunately, Slate will be creating a new Fray Editor position - last I heard they're looking at a full-time post based out of one of the home offices. I think that proposal has a lot of advantages (keep griping about the archives for me), but you'll have to do your part to keep the fresh young thing they hire committed to presenting the honest voice of the readers to Slate's staff. In my ideal world the Fray Editor would be the equivalent of Slate's ombudsman, working with you guys to hold our writers and editorial staff to the level of integrity that everyone in the news business aspires to.

Whoever the newcomer is, he or she will be arriving with a total fresh perspective. At a minimum, I hope you can find it in your heart to surrender your frustrations with me, the magazine, and/or my freditorial colleagues (Adam and Moira will also be leaving) and give the newbie your full support.

As for my future... well, those of you who have wished ill on me since before I even signed on as Fray Editor will surely be disappointed. But, for the rest of you who might care, I'm pleased to report that (a) I've got a new job; (b) I won't ever have to be a lawyer; and (c) I get to continue writing for a living, which I've been doing a great deal of despite my lack of Fraywatch columns.

I'll try and make some time over the next two weeks to actually speak with you guys, and answer some of the questions you might have about what's happening or why. Despite my constant surliness and our often testy interactions, I really respect you guys and admire what happens here. Keep up the good work.

And Seductotron?
by catnapping

I remember a dog my dad got me when we first came back to the states...but she bit someone, and had to be put down.

I never knew. My dad told me he'd taken her to a farm where there were lots of other dogs for her to play with...

You didn't take Seductotron to some robot farm, did you? I mean, you could always leave him with us.

Well, let me be the first to say...

Good luck, Geoff. I'm sorry you won't be a member of the guild but if you're happy, so am I.

Finding a Job in the news bidness in this economy is a big accomplishment. Actually, finding any job is an accomplishment.

Good luck scout. Keep your tinder dry and all that stuff.

Actually, here's hoping the very best for you.

Goodbye, Geoff. Feels kind of anticlimactic since you've been gone almost all year anyway - but regardless, its always good to hear someone is moving on and moving up. As long as the new job doesn't involve watching inmates (of any stripe) you should be fine.

Seriously, I'm happy for you.

It's a little suspicious all three of you leaving
by Jimminyc

I didn't know Moira was back and now she's leaving again?? I don't know how management viewed her but she was the most helpful editor I've seen here!!! We therefore tried to help her!

Really sorry you're not taking over, Moira. You're the best!!!

I have not had contact with you, Greg, so nothing to say but Good Luck.

OK, now bring out the good news!

BIG OOOOPS- GEOFF!

Geoff:

Another shot across the bow???

The last I heard, you were going to Stanford to get a law degree? That degree comes on top of whatever else you had in your basket of knowledge. So, we chunk that off to the side and go in a completely different direction. Aren't we being a tad in decisive?

I have know you six years now. A bunch of us got together and shared some beers at "Monks" in Chicago with you. I missed the second outing with you when you passed through town again. In person, you are a likeable guy; but then like I always said, there are things said here that would never be said to a person's face by another.

I wish you best of luck Geoff. I enjoyed meeting you the one time we did get together with some of the Chicago crowd. I know you will do well in your endeavors. You know where I am if you ever care to drop an email. The battle still goes on at home; but, I am confident we will win. Good Luck!

PS: Moira and Adam . . .

Moira, I never really got to know you. You seem nice and you tried. Adam, I enjoyed our occassional conversations and was suprised at you knowledge in economics. I wish you had trotted that out every once in a while as there are not many here to exchange thoughts with on certain topics. Take care you two.
You deleted Woolley and JackDallas' posts?
by BFD

And did nothing about what they notified you of?

Talk about a disservice.

before you go

Give Smutzie a check for the post I lnked to below, if you have time of course.

Good luck and God Speed for all of you guys. Hopefully the new will be at least as good as the old.

Bummer.

My biggest gripe with the editors is that they allow too many spammers and vile top posts to happen with no repercussions at all. Right now, as we speak, BB, FB and BOTF to name but three are being spammed with obscene posts. This has to stop.
RainMan asked me to ask you
by JackDallas

to unban him before you go. He says he's sorry for what he did....whatever it was.
