Let's Be Real

Are they serious? I remember hearing someone say that Obama's election proved that America was finally moving past the bigotry and racism of our past. This article proves one thing. Racism wears many masks. Would this be happening if he were a white man? Since when is a birth certificate, social security number, statement from your state of birth and call to your elderly grandmother in another country not enough to prove citizenship? This witch-hunt is another in a long list of attempts to burn an innocent man at the stake. Like it or not this half african american, half caucasian man is our new president. Not because he's black, not because he's white, not because he's lucky but because we voted him into the office and I for one plan to support him. A good term for him equals a good term for America so put away the masks and let's try to restore our country.

I believe we're going to see more of this for the next couple of elections or so. The public largely believes that Google and Wikipedia make everyone an expert on everything -- hence believing anonymous Photoshop "experts'" proclamations about typography on scanned paper documents uncritically. It's no crazier than any of the anti-Bush conspiracy theories that have been in no short supply for eight years.

Both sides need to get over this insane idea that it's only their opponents who are out of their minds.

I agree with mimami. None of the other candidate's citizenship was questioned as much as Obama's. At least he was born in a state. McCain was born in the Panama Canal zone, but you do not see coverage of people demanding for a copy of his citizenship.

My ethnicity is Filipino. I was born and raised here in the US. I have a BA in English and Psychology. However, I still get the occassional comment when I first meet someone "Oh you speak English so well," or "Where are you from really?" After I just answered I'm from Jersey. My husband who's Caucasian doesn't get these kinds of remarks/questions.

So when I see this kind of racist and zenophobic attitude I am not at all surprised.

Mimami - I don't think it is just race. It probably wouldn't be happening if he was a Republican with an African dad, either.
