On the one hand we have a college admittance system that admits "legacy" applicants. Those are people who's parents have graduated from the same college. This system gave us both George W. Bush and John McCain, both of which graduated near the bottom of their respective classes. That legacy status not only got them into college in the first place, but propelled them up through the ranks in their later years. George W. Bush is the poster boy for the stupidity of this non-merit based system. On the other hand, this nation had laws on the books that banned certain individuals from even drinking at the same water fountains. Many of the best were simply locked out of the system. And that still goes on today. How far can openly gay people advance today? And why is that damn glass ceiling to damn tough to shatter. An honest assessment would factor in all of those facts.
