Jim,
I once read a book entitled "What the Bible Really Says about Homosexuality." It was written by a Catholic priest and was strangely apologetic, because it went through and lambasted the traditional "biblical" views about homosexuality, but in the end took a funny stance (it seemed to imply "The bible doesn't actually say it's wrong, but the Catholic church still does and I don't want to be excommunicated, so I'm going to say that I nominally will have to agree with the Church . . . after presenting all this evidence to the contrary)
Anyway, one thing it mentioned here is that the word in Hebrew doesn't actually mean "abomination" but something more akin to "ritual taboo." Totally different meaning. I have no idea what that means to people, but there ya go.
The priest also went on to discuss the translation of the passage, which literally means "you shall not lay layings with a man" or something along those lines. It then went on to suggest that this could mean don't have gay sex in a woman's bed, which does go a long with the whole "separation" theme that pervades Exodus. Or it's possible that the Jews didn't like the fact that many people in the ancient world used gay sex as a form of humiliation for their enemies. Or it could be that it meant actual gay sex, and since the ancient hebrews were nomadic, they probably had a high infant moratlity rate, and viewed all sex that didn't lead towards pregnancy as wasteful.
In the end, I like using a line I saw from a movie once. If you're going to use Leviticus against me, then I'll tell you what. I'll take the sausage out of my mouth, when you take the sausage out of yours.
