CNN's Hologram
by Roldie

I respect the other opinions posted to this forum on CNN's Hologram. It is the first time I have seen this technology used on a newscast, and perhaps the same for most or all of you. First, this is not a green screen technology, which is used to report the weather in front of a weather map. It is a more sophisticated technology that used several cameras to create a three dimensional image of a person.

This technology is new, which will naturally make it seem odd and even inappropriate. But that is true of most new technologies. Consider how people felt when the phone was introduced. Or TV. Its just the next in a line of new technologies.

I'm personally very excited about CNN's willingness to try something new. And as someone who has seen other companies or people try new things with new technology, CNN is to be applauded. They did a fabulous and professional job using a new technology. Not only did the technology work well, without flaws, but they gave thought to how this new technology would add value to their news coverage.

This is a glimpse into the future and we should all applaud CNN for taking the first step. Trust me, eventually all newscasts will use holograms.

Sorry CNN representative, but this isn't new, and it's not a hologram. It's the same thing ESPN has been doing in their studio with the video game characters from Madden. The person in the studio doesn't see it. It's added by a computer just like the yellow lines in football.

Jeff Thanks for your comment. I agree that some of the technology used was green screen technology that has been used by weather reporters and sports television programs. But CNN did go beyond that older technology.

Here is a link to an article that describes the technology in more detail:

By the way, I don't work for CNN and I had nothing to do with the broadcast or the technology used. I'm just a viewer like you. But I do appreciate individuals and companies that are willing to experiment with new technologies.
