Obama reinforces gender stereotypes in recent speeches

He talks about "Nancy the Nurse", "Sally the teacher", and "Charlie the construction worker". Wow, way to break ground for non-traditional jobs for women, or men for that matter. How about "Charles the respiratory therapist", or "Jane the sanitation worker"? The fact is that Obama has revealed time and again that his personal attitudes and that of his campaign on women is as paleolithic as the Bush administration's energy policy. Does anyone else remember "sweetie the journalist"? Does this kind of thing bother feminists anymore or is it only those of us who walk the walk of gender equality who care about things like this?

ah, lub, more unsourced anti-Obama ranting. I really hope America makes you totally irrelevant next Tuesday.

I saw it on CNN just now. They were lauding the fact that Obama was using McCain's own arguments against him. Funny. To me it was glaringly offensive. Just like the old go fish cards kids still play with that are incredibly gender stereotyping. Does Obama's children play with those I wonder. Colleges really need to get rid of those women's studies departments. They have done squat to change attitudes in this country even amongst the so called elite. They are obviously a huge waste of money.

As for my irrelevance, how charming of you to believe that half of all Americans will be irrelevant after the election. You and Mr. Obama would like to incorporate my wealth into the public coffers so in at least one way I will still be relevant.

Heh. Why don't you check your candidate's record on gender issues, lubbesuh?

I don't consider late term abortions particulary helpful to women or humanity for that matter.

There's that one, yes. And how about equal pay? Seems pretty beneficial.
Re: Obama reinforces gender stereotypes in recent speeches

There are already equal pay laws in place. If you are talking about comparable worth type laws, those are problematic for businesses and would be a nightmare if enacted. By choosing Palin as a running mate, McCain has made a pretty good showing in terms of advancing the cause of gender equality, wouldn't you say?

McCain reportedly pays his female staffers on average more than his male staffers. Obama pays female staff 80 cents on the dollar. Actions speak louder than words, sweetie.

I have to admire your inflated sense of self-esteem. You must be one of those kids who was awarded a trophy just for showing up at the awards ceremony.

You are wrong to assume that half of all Americans are as stupid as are you.

Absolutely not. For all Palin's onstage babies and Valentino dresses, she's essentially a man - a transvestite. Republicans' attraction to her is homoerotic.

richardlee,

I think you nailed it.

Setting aside that Palin presumably has female genitalia, some Esther Newton seems appropriate here. Maybe some Judith Butler, for good measure.

Who fricking cares? As a woman I make my own way so I don't need to be validated by someone listing non-traditional career paths. Personally, I think that's the problem with feminism today. Instead of working towards real equality, they try to get everyone to simply engage in PC speak.

No. He chose her because of her gender. That is just as sexist and wrong as not chosing someone because of her gender.
