Yes - some portable ACs are better than others
by revmormor
Oh how I laughed reading Melonyce McAfee's report on portable ACs - and how I wished I had that review July 4! I live in my RV at the Gulfport MS Navy base RV park at which I'm stationed (geo-bachelor-ing while my husband stays at our home in TN). The morning of July 4 my AC blew because of a lightening surge. I called and left messages at several mobile RV repair services - to no avail (what did I expect? it was the 4th of July!). As the temperature crept higher (along with the humidity), I called my husband. After much protesting on my part, he convinced me to go to WalMart (the only store open) and buy a portable AC unit - for a mere $299 (brand name but none that Ms McAfee reviewed). Six hours later - after ruining my RV window screen and rigging some foam installation around the hose - I had air. Well, you'd think I'd have air - my trailer is only 24 x 8. The unit leaked (excessively - I resorted to a bucket & hose rigging to save my floor), was noisier than the trailer's AC unit and barely got the temp below 87. Needless to say, once my AC unit was repaired (5 days later), I promptly returned the portable AC to WalMart for a refund.

Last summer while stationed in Kansas, Only a short summer for us due to a deployment, and not wanting to get carried away with buying a window unit, not to mention had an issue with the smaller window unit I was using, making the windows rattle, decided after seeing the soleus xl120 at the px, at a verry resonable sale price to but this one. It did not work when i got it home, so i jumped through all the hoopes I had to for the waranty, and MY GOD what a nightmare. This was the worst experience with any company Ive ever had in my life. To make a short story long, I didnt get the A/C unit back before the summer months were just about over., Needless to say I ended up buying another unit while waiting on the SOLEUS XL120. Dont buy anything with this name on it! Just my openion.

We have a sunroom on our house and before a portable air conditioner it could not be used during the summer. Now we put it on around 3 oclock in the afternoon and it cools quickly and fine. Now we are able to enjoy the sunroom with all the window view no matter how hot it maybe outside. We have had our unit for four years and would not give it back for anything.

You get what you pay for. Most portable units that are worth a damn are over $400 at the very least. It's just common sense that if you pay less than that for a cheaper model, you will get less than desirable results.
