The prefab pad
by buckloy

A great example of mid-century prefab homes are the Lustron houses built (assembled) from 1949-1950. They were made entirely of enameled steel panels inside and out, came in parts on a truck and assembled on site. There were around 2,500 built and around 1,500 remain now. A large number were built as military housing in Quantico, VA and now sadly are being destroyed to make way for more conventional housing. I have owned a Lustron for the past 3 years and love the lack of maintance of a 50+ year old home.

hello,from Virginia.

I live in northern VA. I bought a premade Amish ,well made, shed. The W***** Country

zoning were scared to death I might want it for an extra room.It is 12 x 24 ft.I met with "zoning from he**. I have to have it in line with my house,so many feet from my house,so many feet from my property line.I own 8 acres and you would think it would not have been a hassel, right? On a mountain top. That drops off....mountain tops do....where they wanted it placed.DUH. They consider placing it on stilts extending over the side a good alternative. All their answers also cost a great deal and compare to what developers do.They don't think in terms of average , getting by, person here in this country.

Well actually they do, hence the fear of using it as an additional room.Did I mention the great construction of these buildings by the Amish?

I had it in great spots that blended with the topography and woods..had to move it.This is no longer a plus around here. What happened to that train of thought? Blending and being nice in the enviroment. On the 3rd move and cost of professional movers....I got it where they wanted. They finally approved it.With the back side hanging over the edge.I had to shore it up and put support umder it.(did I mention the roof sky lights nows leak on an expensive bldg.?)

Don't plan on doing anything "out of the box" in northern Virginia....ROFL................

Ohhhhhh...I have to pay the power company apx $40 for 52 cents worth of electricity to it also, a month.

I'll save my phone bill rant for another time....................................................:) :)

(as to how much tax they stick onto my bill...I can't afford long distance..just taxes and fees.)
