Fifth Amendment
by stan2
Nixon had the theory that the President was essentially an elected dictator, that the only check on his power was the quadrennial election. Bush clearly is operating under the same theory, and the only way to check this power grab is the same that was used against Nixon, impeachment, or at least the strong threat of impeachment.

I've dismissed as nut jobs those calling for impeachment these last few years. They and you are right, though. This administration represents a threat to our nation.

One letter each week to your elected representatives. Start with asking them to challenge the July 17 and August 2 Executive Orders. Move to asking for impeachment.

Clinton apparently brought up an idea like this in Cabinet once -- and Robert Rubin shot it down in flames.

Don't be surprised if the next move of BushCo is to burn the Reichstag Building or something similar to it. Seriously folks we have a President that has run amuck with the US Constitution. This is 1933 Germany all over again.

I would not go that far at least not yet. He has certainly special cased the Fifth Amendment amongst other liberties. I hope that the next president whether Republican or Democrat will remove those executive orders he has signed up that strip our civil liberties.

If Congress or the electorate can't get their act together it is possible the military could persuade Bush and Cheney into early retirement. Given the thousands of troops in the Washington Military Region, under certain scenarios the Joint Chiefs could be very persuasive. They are after all sworn to uphold the Constitution and who is better to do so.

Don't depend on a military "junta" to straighten things out. Most of the "career Officer staff" are a bunch of ass kissing fuckups that think more about their pensions than their duty to the country. We don't have any "War Fighter" General Officers anymore. They are all "Social Workers" and can't even secure our Borders.
