Why McCain voters don't admit it to pollsters

For several election cycles the pollsters have been proven wrong. Every time they claim the Democrat is in the lead they end up having missed the call.
Laurie went into some of the weighting reasons earlier, in her own inimitable style -- few know how to whack a hornet's nest better -- as usual, along with her baiting banter, she made some excellent points.
But there has also been a theory I've heard repeated over the years that Republicans tend, at least a bit slightly more than Democrats, to not open up to pollsters who've given them a call.
I could see a liberal arguing that's because those of us voting Republican are ashamed of our greedy, mean personalities for good reason.
That, of course, is hogwash. Most of us our proud of the fact that we're not socialistic extremist progressive liberals, and are willing to tell anyone to their face for whom we are voting and why.
But I know several people personally who are going to vote for John McCain and will not talk about it other than in extremely private circumstances.
Now, me "knowing several people" certainly isn't scientific. But notice how the liberal argument has already formed that "if Obama loses it will be because of racism, and nothing else."
The self fulfilling nature of that prophecy aside, once again, we've just been accused of racism.
For years liberals have whined that they shouldn't be called liberals, while some of the smarter ones have simply said, "It shouldn't be considered a bad word ... I'm a proud liberal." But there's a huge difference between being called a racist hate monger and a "liberal."
So, as you watch the weighted polls tighten just consider how many thousands upon thousands of people the pollsters are calling. I think there's a statistically significant number of people hanging up on the pollsters or pretending to be Obama supporters so the nice girl on the other end of the line isn't offended, or so that the computer tabulation doesn't tag one's phone number a certain way in the data bank. Me? I've never been called to answer a poll in a presidential election, probably because I live in California. But I'd answer.
As these polls tighten, know McCain is taking the lead.
